Hi and welcome to my blog. I really think parents need to lighten up; I mean, if parenting was meant to be a serious endeavor they'd offer classes! Oh, wait....

Lucy...You Got Some Splainin' To Do....

I know I do a lot of bitching about how small my house is and how we are just over-run with people and pets; and goodness knows, I would really like to blame the Hubby tell you that this was all the Hubby's idea but... I can't.  You see Saturday morning I was glued to facebook doing a little research for a post when I came across a news feed from the ASPCA saying that there were over 600 pets displaced by the F5 tornado that ripped through Joplin, Mo.

Six hundred animals without homes and
families to care from them!

It went on to say how Joplin and surrounding shelters were busting at the seems trying to help and care for all of these pets. After trying for over a month to reunite families with their pets the time had come to find forever homes for these animals, so they had an Adopt-a-thon event.  For one weekend only they would waive all adoption fees in the hopes that people would open their hearts and their homes and adopt one of these displaced pets.

And they did! 745 pets found homes in two days!

Please welcome __________ the dog to the Mommy Household.  He is a 2-3 year old Bagel (a Beagle/Basset Hound mix).  He's a very sweet and loving dog.  He's also a very fat, lazy dog so he kinda fits right in. The shelter didn't have much info on him and given the circumstances that's to be expected. We do know that he was neutered, micro-chipped, current on all shots, tested for heart worms and that he was "Safer" tested for aggression. We were also given a handy, dandy tote bag with coupons and other offers. Overall, a pretty sweet deal!
__________ the dog is the first shelter dog the Hubby or I has ever adopted.  The boxer came from a reputable breeder and my weenie dog came from a friend of a friend.  I always thought that shelter dogs were unwanted mutts (see Disney's Lady and the Tramp) or worse, abused, damaged dogs unsuitable for homes with children. I had no idea that that not only are there wonderful, child loving pups in the shelter system, they also have pure-breeds and even designer dogs like our Bagel.
So for the past couple of days we've been sitting around playing with our dogs (in case you lost count we now have 3 what was I thinking), walking our dogs (hey, we gotta work that "shelter" weight off him), and cleaning up after our dogs--not everyone was as thrilled with our newest family member there may or may not have been some territorial peeing, snarling and general pissiness. It's been a good weekend and in the end we did something good and maybe made a difference. I know that if the situation were reversed and OUR dogs were looking for good homes I would want someone to take a chance on them.
The only thing left for us to do, is decide on a name for our newest doggie.  Porter came up with Snort and the Hubby's vote is for Mongo but we gotta decide something soon because "Hey, You" isn't really effective.  If you have any better suggestions (PLEASE come up with some better suggestions!) leave a comment or drop me an email at

And if you are looking to add to your family maybe a shelter dog (or cat) would be right for you.  Check out this website and it will help you find the perfect pet in a shelter near you.
