Hi and welcome to my blog. I really think parents need to lighten up; I mean, if parenting was meant to be a serious endeavor they'd offer classes! Oh, wait....

The Killing Fields

I spoke of the fish tank in a previous entry.  I spoke of my disdain, of my apathy for all things fishy.  Well the inevitable has occurred twice over now.  We have replaced all of the inhabitants of the fish tank twice; and still the body count rises! Gone is Harry the Japanese Fighting Fish. Gone too are all five of the Hendersons; stripy flashes of blue, they were.  Gone is the Sucker Fish named Janitor and also Gary the first.
In the second round there was Gary II, another snail whose sole purpose was to suck up the scum of his fallen brethren, three Mollies, a guppy, and a new set of Hendersons.  The black Molly, whose name is forever lost to the sands of time, fell first.  The golden Molly, named Molly and the new set of Hendersons; this time only three, quickly followed suit.  After a couple more days the guppy was floating and the silver Molly was swimming sideways.  The sole survivor was Gary II.
So now we have a very clean albeit empty tank.  My vote is that we stick to what works for us—a snail.  The children love him and now Porter understands that snails do not like to go for walks outside the tank (sorry Gary I), so I think he’s safe.  I just think that these bright, yet obviously very slow, flashes of color are too much of a temptation for preschool children.  I just really can’t blame Porter for wanting to touch them and for caring enough to allow them to explore the big giant bathtub.  If only he had let me know the fish was swimming free before I let the water out of the tub.  And how exactly do you explain to your traumatized son, who just witnessed what happens when you put “bait” into the turtle tank, that the turtles and the fish really shouldn’t live together?
Myriam seems to be the only one that understands we don’t touch the fish, or maybe she, like me is just ambivalent.  Either way I have an empty fish tank and a hubby who is itching to fill it with bright flashing jewels.  Little do those little jewels know that their days are numbered.
